first mention of the c word
Dr O'Conner calls. the ultrasound shows a large mass next to Blue's right kidney. most likely cancer, hemangiosarcoma. yes, i can take her home. but she could bleed to death in an hour at any time. i just start crying. Jane calls.
ultrasound
we trek back to the vet, early enought to make me set the alarm. i hand over the leash and away she goes, looking back at me with a sharp fear.

distress
i am watching her. this is no urinary infection. it is something else. i bring her with me to the vet. at the desk i say, she isn't well. alarmed, they say bring her right in. i am parked in a handicapped spot. a young woman from the desk has come outside. she walks to the car with me. Blue is curled up in the back seat.
back in the exam room, the vet and i talk. we need to do more. yes, i do want an abdominal x-ray.
there is cloudiness, she tells me. whatever does that mean? she can't see the organs. an ultrasound is the only way to see things now. but we have to wait until tomorrow. fine, we'll be back for that.
i pick up the prescription and we start that tonight.
