would you reach out your hand to save a drowning man if you thought he might pull you in?
since last week i have been obsessed with the film: masked & anonymous.
Tommy has come to town to help with the grant. we watched the film together last night. i actually bought the dvd the other day, i want to study it.
we head down Highway 1 to Pacifica to walk the dogs. in the car, laptop edits to the draft of the letter of inquiry for Creative Capital. we are so carefree, and there is something absolutely golden about this moment.
arriving at the beach, we slowly pace the esplenade to the sand. it is overcast and windy. a few beachgoers are clustered. i notice wet clothes and hair. there is an electrcicity to the air, an edge. something amiss, something frantic. a woman on a cell phone.
"is everything alright?"
"no NO a boy just drowned. they aren't coming. i'm calling but they aren't coming"
he was swept out to sea. gone in an instant.
the sea is very rough. i know he will not be found.
she tried. jumped in and tried to reach him. but the sea was stronger. her husband plunged in and pulled her back. while their own two young boys stood on the sand.
i help the sister in law collect their belongings from the beach. distraught. i carry a towel back to the woman.
"i couldn't save him. i tried. i couldn't reach him. he was right there but i could't reach him."
